In a shocking revelation, fresh juices stored in stainless containers
at various shops on Old Bus Stand premises and sold to customers were
found to be made from rotten fruits.
A team led by T. Anuradha, District Designated Health Officer, Tamil
Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, raided a total of
30 shops selling juices, water bottles, snacks and other items.
Officials seized rotten bananas, pineapple, and apples with fungus
formation used in preparing juices.
Also, bakery powders, ajinomoto, preservatives, unprocessed water,
and harmful colouring agents were found to be used in preparing the
juices.
Officials also found drinking water cans and water packets without
date of manufacturing and warned the shopkeepers against selling such
cans.
Also, the banned gutka, and products with expired date were seized.
Snacks and oily food items were found to be kept in open and the
shopkeepers were asked to cover the items. She asked the shopkeepers not
to indulge in unfair trade practices and warned them that action would
be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act for violations.
Awareness drive
She told The Hindu that many awareness programmes were
conducted for the traders and cases would be registered if they continue
to violate rules. She called on the public to be cautious before buying
these food items as their consumption would pose a major health hazard.
“Fresh juices should not be stored nor preservatives added. Public
should avoid such products,” she added.
