A huge rail consignment of banned
gutka that police confiscated at the Erode Railway Station last month was destroyed
on Friday by a Food Safety Department team. Railway Protection Force personnel
at the railway parcel office had unloaded the consignment, after finding it was
sent without the addresses of sender and recipient, from the Chennai Egmore -
Mangalore Express Mail, on October 22.
The consigment had reportedly
surfaced while other baggage was being unloaded.
The Railway Protection Force had
preferred a complaint with the Government Railway Police and handed over the
consignment. Since there was no claimant for a month, the consignment was
destroyed, police sources said. The bags containing chewable tobacco were set
on fire by the team with support from the Government Railway Police. The
destroyed tobacco was worth Rs. 5.5 lakh, G.Karunanidhi, District Officer for
Food Safety and Drug Control, said.
