AFSTI gears up for 7th IFCON to be held from December 18-21 at CSIR-CFTRI

The Association of Food Scientists & Technologists (AFSTI) is organising the 7th edition of the International Food Convention (IFCON) at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), campus Mysore, from December 18 to 21, 2013.

The event with its theme--NSURE (Nutritional Security through Sustainable Development Research and Education) for Healthy Foods--is conducted in association with the CSIR-CFTRI, NIFTEM (National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli, Haryana), and Defence Food Research Laboratory (DRDO).

There would be 21 sessions covering food & nutritional security and sustainability (FSS); food processing & engineering (FPE); food safety & quality management systems (FSQMS); food health & nutrition (FHN); skill development & entrepreneurship (SDE); and food science & technology research and education (FSTRE).

The topic under FSS would be pre-harvest intervention, storage & infestation control, organic farming, bio-pesticides, genetic engineering, food irradiation, bio-remediation, and supply chain management.

FPE will include machinery for traditional foods, thermal processing for food preservation, membrane processing, beverages, high pressure processing, meat/fish/poultry processing, food packaging, grain processing, emerging food processing technologies, ready-to-serve /ready-to-heat /ready-to-cook foods, spice processing, dairy processing, baking and confectionery, traditional & ethnic foods, and waste water/effluent treatment.

FSQMS will cover advances in food analysis, risk analysis of heavy metals, pesticides and chemicals, food safety and quality assurance systems, microbiological safety food, instrumentation & sensory analysis.

FHN will address importance of water in food/health, specialty proteins, specialty lipid, specialty carbohydrates, nutraceutical and functional foods, fortified foods, pre, pro & synbiotics, dietary/health/medical supplement foods, and natural and bioactive principles.

SDE will delve into public and private entrepreneurship, technology incubation centres, intellectual property rights, marketing challenges of foods and food processing, government and non-government funding for food processing, prospects, and challenges of micro small medium enterprises (MSMEs) in process and marketing of foods.

The FSTRE component will highlight the recent developments and advances in food science & technology education/research, career prospects for food professionals, R&D funding and publishing.

There will be 1,000 poster paper presentations from students, scientists and industry. The conference is expected to involve over 100 international delegates and 100 industry participants. There would also be around 50 educational institutes and 2,000 registered delegates from academia, research and policy-making government bodies.

The conference would also feature business-to-business interaction among participants.

Chief patrons of the event include Prof. Samir K Brahmachari, secretary, DSIR and DG CSIR; Dr S Ayyappan, secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR; Siraj Hussain, secretary, ministry of food processing industries; and VV Bhat, former secretary, finance, ISRO.
