The Centre has granted the University of Agricultural
Sciences, Bengaluru's (UAS-B) Bakery Training Unit a sum of Rs 1 crore
under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) to set up 27 bakeries
within the next two years in Tumkur, the district that been identified
for the pilot programme under the Rural Livelihood Security Project,
which involves gram panchayats.
The funding – which would be for a period of two years – is for the purpose of training rural women, most of whom are either farm labourers or housewives. Speaking on the sidelines of the Krishi Mela, which was held at UAS-B, S V Suresh, coordinator, Bakery Training Unit, Directorate of Extension, UAS-B, said that the bakeries commissioned during the period would be manned by these women.
Of the Rs 1 crore grant, UAS' Bakery Training Unit would ensure a hand-holding assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh per outlet for the requisite infrastructure and the installation of equipment like ovens, dough mixers and cutters. Suresh stated, “This support would enable rural women to establish and sustain the bakery venture at ease.”
“There are backyard vegetable gardens in most farming locations, and the produce from there could also be utilised in the preparation of nutritious bakery products. Therefore the programme is seen to bring in a whiff of fresh air for the rural women, as training would be imparted on quality baking and developing into a baker,” he added.
The duration of the training programme, which would ensure 100 per cent job placements, is a year and 14 weeks. It would also provide a nutrition programme for students, self-help groups (SHGs), nursing college and hotel management students and physically-challenged persons, besides organising training for tribal population at their locations.
After the success of the project, the Centre would embark upon the state-level implementation of bakeries, which is being seen as a profitable business proposition. Farm produce, such as wheat, maize and millets, could be used for the production of value-added bakery products, including bread, buns and biscuits.
