CHENNAI:
Railway Protection Force personnel seized more than 1,000kg of gutka at Chennai Central railway station on Wednesday evening.
The banned tobacco item was packed in 22 sacks and booked as luggage
to Visakhapatnam. The person who had booked the consignment could not be
traced. The consignment is expected to be worth Rs 5 lakh in the
market.
Each sack had 53kg of gutka and was to be loaded on a Kolkata-bound
train, said a senior official of RPF. This is the biggest seizure of
gutka at Central.
Sources said the contraband was seized during checks being carried
out in view of the elections. “We found the sacks on the platform and
checked them on suspicion and found they contained the banned item,”
said a railway official.
Though gutka is banned, it is freely available in different pockets
of the city. The civic body and police have not been able to enforce the
ban strictly.
