The administration has come out with
a set of guidelines for registering retail vendors and manufacturers of food
items under Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA), 2006.
Under rule 2.1 of FSSA, the
licensing rules apply to all food manufacturers and suppliers, bottling plants,
hospital canteens, oil manufacturers, rice retailers, bakeries, ice plants,
soda plants, milk vendors among others. Those engaged in cottage-level food
manufacturing such as making snacks from homes, wedding caterers, temporary
food suppliers for temple festivals, and food retailers through petty shops
with an annual procurement of less than Rs.12 lakh are required to apply for
licences to the area food safety officers.
