The
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gave its in-principle nod to
the proposal by independent corporator Makarand Narvekar – who is also
the civic body's law committee chairman – to keep eateries in malls,
commercial and non-residential areas (and certain stores) open 24 hours a
day and seven days a week at its recent general body meeting.
Based on the corporator's view that the 24X7 concept was a necessity, and not a luxury, in a metropolis like Mumbai, a specific notice of motion was passed in the House. It proposed an amendment to Section 19 of the Bombay Shops and Establishments Act, 1948, which stipulates and regulates the timing restrictions for eateries and restuarants.
Narvekar opined that the proposal would also help to boost tourism and, in turn, the state's economy, and added that the intention was to ensure that Mumbai-based professionals, as well as those arriving in the city at odd hours, enjoy its nightlife. However, he categorically stated that this would not be applicable to bars and pubs.
