With the aim of making schools
tobacco-free, health authorities conducted raids on shops located near schools
in the city on
Monday.
The health
officials, on instructions from the District Collector, raided 716 shops near
various schools in the city. About 2,600 packets of cigarettes and 2,000 pan
masala packets were seized and destroyed as per rules under the Cigarettes and
other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003. A fine of Rs. 8,300 was collected
from the outlets found violating the laws.
The
District Medical Officer requested all school authorities to create awareness
among students about anti-tobacco laws. DMO Haseena Mohammed, RCH officer
Santhakumari, and District Health Officer (Rural) P.N. Sreenivasan led the team
of health inspectors and junior health inspectors during the raids.
